Meta had announced last year they are working on a smartwatch that would compete with the Apple Watch. The proposed smartwatch was also touted to come with an integrated camera along with other advanced features. However, as per the latest development on this, the said smartwatch has now been put on the back burner and no one knows when the project is going to be revived again, if at all.
The reason being cited is that the parent company Facebook is keen to train all its focus on the development of metaverse at the moment. As Bloomberg stated, all devices that feature Wi-Fi, GPS support, and integrated Spotify have been shunted out even though Meta continues to work on a few other wrist wearable devices.
As for the smartwatch, those having knowledge of the matter claim that it was touted to have several features such as activity tracking, messaging, and music playback, things that are common to most smartwatches out there. However, one of the key features of the device happened to be its dual-camera setup, with one of them being placed beneath the display while the other is placed on the back of the user’s wrist.
However, the second camera placed underneath the smartwatch required the wearer to take the watch off to take an image. If that is not problematic enough, the same has also been found to be interfering with the specific smartwatch feature of converting the wearer’s nerve signals into digital commands.
The Meta smartwatch was also conceived to let the wearer have a seamless transition into the Metaverse. That would have been by the application of electromyographic principles that would allow the wearer to use the human hand to control other devices, which also includes those that are metaverse oriented as well.
The said smartwatch was also not expected to be attached to an app store of the sort the Apple Watch enjoys. Rather, it’s the Facebook account that will enable users to link to other services such as Spotify, Instagram, WhatsApp, calendar, activity tracking, and whatnot. The Meta smartwatch was expected to debut around 2023 with a $349 price tag.
With a keen interest in tech, I make it a point to keep myself updated on the latest developments in the world of technology and gadgets. That includes smartphones or tablet devices but stretches to even AI and self-driven automobiles as well, the latter being my latest fad. Besides writing, I like watching videos, reading, listening to music, or experimenting with different recipes. Motion picture is another aspect that interests me a lot and maybe I’ll make a film sometime in the future.
