Apple has been working on an augmented and virtual reality headset for long but things seem to be reaching a stage of culmination soon. The Cupertino giant has shown off a headset with both AR and VR capability to its board of directors, Bloomberg reported. Apple also assured members its engineers are working on an operating system, tentatively named realityOS or rOS that the headset would be running and will allow for easy integration with the existing Apple ecosystem as well.
This isn’t the first time though that Apple has shown off AR and VR headsets to its board members as something similar happened back in 2016 itself. However, those were early prototypes, or maybe just proof-of-concept devices that were there to demonstrate its vision of an AR and VR headset to get adequate funding for further development.
Cut short to 2022 and the company seems to have come a long way with its AR and VR plans. Also, as The Verge reported, the headset seems to have reached a stage where it has a fairly clear idea of what its exact software requirements are. This would make it easy for the software team as they know exactly what software features to build and the ones to exclude.
Meanwhile, there is almost next to nothing that we know of the headset at the moment. The Bloomberg report though claims the headset is slated for launch sometime around 2023. There also is the WWDC event scheduled to be held next month and chances are that Apple would drop a hint or two at the time. However, given that is going to be both AR and VR capable, that means users will get to immerse themselves completely in a virtual environment or get to see virtual elements interspersed in the real world.
Noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had earlier stated the headset would be powered by an M1 category chip to allow for superior levels of performance.
With a keen interest in tech, I make it a point to keep myself updated on the latest developments in the world of technology and gadgets. That includes smartphones or tablet devices but stretches to even AI and self-driven automobiles as well, the latter being my latest fad. Besides writing, I like watching videos, reading, listening to music, or experimenting with different recipes. Motion picture is another aspect that interests me a lot and maybe I’ll make a film sometime in the future.
