Meta announced it is working to introduce its Horizon Worlds social metaverse platform to the web. This has been revealed by Meta CTO Andrew “Boz” Bosworth via a Tweet message. Meanwhile, Meta VP of Horizon Vivek Sharma stated plans are already underway to bring Horizon to mobile devices, something that likely will happen later this year itself. Similarly, there also are plans to bring it to the gaming consoles as well. This, as The Verge reported, would make for a major expansion drive for the platform that so far has been confined to only the Quest VR headset.
All of this comes at a time when Horizon announced a new pay structure for creators that have not been to the liking of many. Meta had announced on Tuesday that it would take a 25 percent cut of the Horizon purchases which would be calculated after paying any platform fees that might be applicable. This comes to a flat 25 percent that Meta would charge when it comes to the Horizon web app.
However, things are a bit different for platforms such as Meta’s very own Quest Store which comes with a 30 percent fee. For here it comes down to 25 percent of 70 percent that Meta would be charging. That way, Meta would end up taking a rather steep 47.5 percent cut on stuff sold in Horizon via the Quest VR device.
Boz, however, defended the rate structure claiming it is still lower than many of its competitors such as the Roblox has been charging. As it is, Roblox already seems to be charging a hefty fee which is even higher than what Meta takes from sales on Horizon via the Quest headset unit. Boz has also been critical of Apple’s move to take a 30 percent cut from many an App Store transactions, allegations that Apple stated are irrelevant.
With a keen interest in tech, I make it a point to keep myself updated on the latest developments in the world of technology and gadgets. That includes smartphones or tablet devices but stretches to even AI and self-driven automobiles as well, the latter being my latest fad. Besides writing, I like watching videos, reading, listening to music, or experimenting with different recipes. Motion picture is another aspect that interests me a lot and maybe I’ll make a film sometime in the future.
