Apple names its AR/VR headset operating system as xrOS

Apple has named the software that would be powering its AR/ VR headset as ‘xrOS’, Bloomberg reported. So far, it is rOS short for realityOS that was being speculated to be the name of the software that would run on its upcoming AR/VR headset. In contrast, ‘XR’ which is believed to stand for Extended Reality will have a wider scope in that it will cover both augmented reality and virtual reality.

Further, xrOS is also going to be more appropriate considering that it is a mixed-reality headset that Apple is believed to be working on. That points to the headset being both an augmented reality and virtual reality-capable device. Rumor has it that the Apple headset will be launched sometime in 2023, ideally during WWDC or maybe earlier than that as well. This way, developers will have enough time to come up with suitable apps that can make the most of the headset’s capabilities.

Each of Apple’s devices such as the Apple TV, the Apple Watch, the iPad, or iPhone run their own operating systems but have interoperability built into them to ensure seamless connectivity and data sharing capabilities between the devices. Also, as it is with the other Apple platforms, the xrOS will also have its own dedicated app store as well. Apple is also reported to have worked on several of its own apps such as Maps and Messages to imbibe AR/VR capabilities into them. There is going to be an SDK made available later on for developers to create apps for the headset.

Bloomberg meanwhile also stated it has come across a shell company by the name Deep Dive LLC that is currently engaged in registering the name xrOS in many regions of the world. Apple is known to follow a similar strategy when it comes to registering trademarks secretly in other countries for several of its upcoming products and devices.

Stay tuned for more on this as it emerges.

With a keen interest in tech, I make it a point to keep myself updated on the latest developments in the world of technology and gadgets. That includes smartphones or tablet devices but stretches to even AI and self-driven automobiles as well, the latter being my latest fad. Besides writing, I like watching videos, reading, listening to music, or experimenting with different recipes. Motion picture is another aspect that interests me a lot and maybe I’ll make a film sometime in the future.
