Samsung might be working on a new augmented reality (AR) headset that would support multi-user Metaverse experiences, XRToday reported citing Korea Herald.
“(Metaverse-related, AR devices) are now the talk of the town, so we have buckled down to a task to cope with the trend. It won’t take too long. We are striving for perfection as we gear up for the launch,” said Samsung CEO, Han Jong-hee at the recently concluded Mobile World Conference (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain. This is enough of a hint for the company to get back to offering a headset that can offer the best Metaverse experiences.
The South Korean conglomerate had in the past offered Odyssey and Gear VR headsets that let it maintain a presence in the extended reality (XR) segment. The company has launched the Gear VR in November 2015 and went on to launch the Odyssey in November 2017. However, that was before the Metaverse had taken shape while AR and VR were still at their formative stages. All of that changed though following the mega Connect event held late last year which brought both AR and VR back to the centerstage.
All of this has led to a mad rush for the development of headsets with Meta itself developing several XR headsets as it gears up to the public release of Horizon: Worlds – the metaverse platform in the making and is already the talk of the tech town. Amon the headset in the making is the Project Cambria which happens to be a premium VR headset that will have MR features.
Apart from this, the Menlo Park, CA-based firm is also known to be working on a pair of new smart glasses as part of Project Nazare. The smart glasses are being designed for everyday applications and will have overlays while also providing access to digital assistants via voice commands. That is not all as Meta is also believed to be working on an XR smartwatch as well that is expected to be launched around summer and will have support for AR and XR applications.
Coming back to Samsung, while nothing is known about its upcoming XR headset, that it is already gearing up to the metaverse reality is evident from the fact that it held its Unpacked 2022 on the Metaverse platform. The company recreated its New York City flagship store on Decentraland, which is among the more well-known Metaverse space. The digital twin which has come to be known as Samsung 837X serves as a virtual showroom for the company and is already hosting around 300,000 active users every month or about 18,000 active users daily.
With a keen interest in tech, I make it a point to keep myself updated on the latest developments in the world of technology and gadgets. That includes smartphones or tablet devices but stretches to even AI and self-driven automobiles as well, the latter being my latest fad. Besides writing, I like watching videos, reading, listening to music, or experimenting with different recipes. Motion picture is another aspect that interests me a lot and maybe I’ll make a film sometime in the future.
